About the Omi Brotherhood in Japan.
William Merell Wories arrived in Japan in 1905. He was an architect by training, but he went to Japan with the specific goal of leading people to Christ. Vories went to one of the most remote parts of Japan called Omi-Hachiman because he wanted to find a place far from the cities where other missionaries would not go.

Vories got a job teaching English in the Omi-Hachiman area – a Buddhist area in what is now called “Shiga Prefecture”. After a few days of work, he started Bible classes immediately and expected at best half a dozen people to come. 45 students came to the first class. Within a few weeks, he had four groups and a total of 322 students enrolled. Many became Christians, and in the strict Buddhist culture, the price for many students of following Jesus was to be thrown out of their homes and families. Soon, many were living crampedly in the missionary’s house. Vories urgently needed more space and raised money to build a larger dormitory with enough rooms for living and Bible study.

The Buddhist priests were alarmed because so many young people were giving their lives to Christ. The local Buddhist priests incited the local hooligans to bully and attack the new converts; pushing them into the canal and attacking them with clubs. But when Vories advised his disciples to be patient and long-suffering in their persecution and to pray for them, the bullies soon lost their temper. Several of them became Christians themselves. The priests continued to pressure the school board and Vories was dismissed from his position as English teacher. Two years as a teacher ended in a single day, and Vories was suddenly without a livelihood and with a whole community of young people looking to him for guidance. One night, when Voires prayed to God asking what to do, the idea came to him: Why not put his knowledge of architecture to work? Taking this instruction as an answer to prayer, he called all the students in the dormitory together, grabbed his drawing tools, and said, “Today we will form an architectural firm!” He immediately began to teach his students the knowledge of architecture. Voires received wisdom from God to design buildings that would survive earthquakes in Japan. Soon, it was clear that his houses were standing while others were collapsing. The discovery of how to build buildings that would withstand frequent earthquakes brought more orders than they could produce. In a short period of time, Voires and his architectural brothers were running one of the most influential design firms, working all over Japan. But what made the biggest impact on the job market was their committed Christian lifestyle, both at work and in their personal lives. It truly affected Japan.

The architectural firm was called the “Omi Brotherhood.” Voires and his growing group of associates all lived on salaries that adequately covered their living expenses, regardless of their position. All profits were directed back to evangelism and humanitarian efforts. The Brotherhood established a tuberculosis sanatorium and established schools for girls, very unusual at the time. Sunday schools were started, churches were built, and workers were trained for missionary work. On weekends and evenings, they left their architectural desks and went preaching and teaching in the villages. The number of these Sunday schools and Bible classes grew into churches. Postcards with the gospel message were also sent to practically every home in Japan. Voires also obtained the rights to manufacture Mentholatum ointment in Japan. In addition to designing a factory for the architectural masterpiece, he was able to employ hundreds of workers. Soon, eight million packages a year were being distributed in Japan, each with instructions on how to participate in a Christian Bible course via distance learning. This brought thousands of new believers from all over Japan. The Brotherhood also made a great contribution to teaching how to run a successful business in Asia without corruption. Vories’ vision was that “Christian principles would be applied to every aspect of work, from beginning to end!” He told his employees: “What we produce, or our profits, are not the most important thing. What is most important is how and why we live and work the way we do. This is how we show Christianity!” Business leaders came from all over Japan to admire the modern factories of the Omi Brotherhood and to study Vories’ management principles. The factories were white and airy, equipped with modern machinery. The workers had shiny cafeterias for meals, modern indoor gyms and rest rooms, and airy rooms for prayer. When Japanese labor organizations asked him to tell them the secrets of his success, Vories used the opportunity to talk about Biblical principles in economics, management, and business. The Buddhists also changed their attitude towards Vories over time. One exception was a stubborn wealthy man named Nishikawa who lived in a large 300-year-old mansion. One day, Vories received message that Nishikawa was critically ill with diabetes and he rushed over with insulin, which saved his life. The surprised and sullen old Buddhist asked, “Why are you doing this to me, I’m your old enemy?” Vories smiled and replied, “Where did you get that? I didn’t know about that!” Nishikawa later donated his mansion to the Omi Brotherhood. Eventually, God led Vories to the royal family, and he was able to pray with Prince Masohito, the emperor’s second son, who gave his life to Christ.

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink!”

“The Chosen”

A fisherman struggling with debt. A troubled woman wrestling with oppression. A gifted accountant ostracised from his family and people. In the ground-breaking season of “The Chosen” see how Jesus reaches each of these and more, as He works His first miracles and embarks on His ministry to change the world. See Him through the eyes of those who knew Him.

God`s “living water” comes from Jesus Christ and is the best news for you.

THE BIBLE URGES PEOPLE TO BE THIRSTY. That is why we constantly try to satisfy us with countless things, such as knowledge, career, money, sports, luxury, entertainment, parties, relationships and more. Although we drink this “water”, our satisfaction is not lasting, but rather we are left empty, dehydrated and thirsty. Thus, we have to search for even more “water”, which proves that we were left unsatisfied and that we still are thirsty. One of Jesus words explains this experience: “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again” (John 4:13). How then can our thirst be quenched? Jesus continued: “But he who drinks of the water I give him will never thirst. The water I give will be in him a well that flows and gives eternal life ”(John 4:14).

THROUGH CHRIST DEATH God redeemed us and in the resurrection he became a life-giving spirit so that we would receive “living water” from him. Now he can quench our thirst. To receive Christ, simply turn to God and pray:

Thank you that Jesus died on the cross for my mistakes and removed my guilt and shame. I admit that I have sinned and need your grace. I believe that God raised up Jesus on the third day. Today I hand over my life to you. I choose to turn away from all sin. I choose to put away every part of my life that does not please you. I receive you as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart and guide me and fill me with your Holy Spirit. Restore me and teach me to love as you have loved me. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen (= so be it).
